What is the new system for the Champions League?

Radical changes will occur in the Champions League starting from the 2024-2025 season. The competition will not be played according to its usual system, and we are talking here specifically about the group stage.

The European Football Association (UEFA) announced that these changes come within the framework of the organization’s endeavor to attract more money to the clubs, as well as within the plan to fight the establishment of the European Super League, which is currently the greatest threat to club football in the Old Continent.

It was usual for 32 teams to participate in the group stage. These clubs were divided into 8 groups, each group containing 4 teams, and the groups were determined by lottery, provided that no two teams from the same league met during this round, and each team played only 6 matches, so that the first and second places would qualify for the round. Round of 16.

What is the new system for the Champions League?

The new system for the Champions League will include increasing the number of clubs participating in the group stage to 36 teams instead of 32 teams, with each club playing 8 matches instead of only 6 during this round.

The groups will not be divided into 8 groups, but will be one group containing 36 teams, each team will play with 8 clubs determined by the draw, with 4 matches at home and 4 away with a different team (they will not face the same team back and forth as was the case in the old system) and it is prohibited to Two teams from the same country meet in this round.

After playing the matches, the top 8 teams in the group standings qualify directly to the round of 16, leaving 28 teams from ninth place to thirty-sixth place.

From ninth place to twenty-fourth place will play an elimination round of two round-trip matches, of which 8 teams will qualify for the round of 16.

Teams that lose their play-off matches, and those that rank from 25th to 36th, will end their European participation, as there will be no relegation to the Europa League, unlike the old system.

Starting from the round of 16, the competition returns to its regular system, with all rounds played in a knockout system (a round-trip match) until the final match, which will be a single match on a pre-determined stadium (Allianz Arena in the 2024-2025 edition).

As UEFA announced, it has become practically impossible to conduct the draw for the group stage of the Champions League using the manual system, as there are approximately 900 possibilities for all clubs.

Lottery drawing procedures will be developed and will be a combination of manual and electronic drawing, while automated intervention will be under constant review, to avoid any tampering with the lottery.

The clubs will be divided into 4 classifications based on their results in past years, and each club will meet two clubs from each classification, making adult confrontations in the first round inevitable.
