The only Iraqi weightlifter, Ali Ammar Yasser, succeeded in uniting the Iraqi ranks despite not winning any medals in Paris Olympics 2024.
The champion weightlifter achieved sixth place in the +102 kg weight category during the Paris Olympics, where he set a world record in the youth category in the snatch event, where he lifted 200 kg, and in the clean and jerk event, he lifted 237 kg, achieving 437 kg in total, setting another world record in the youth category.

Yasser said in statements published by Iraqi Olympic Committee“I apologize to the Iraqi fans because I promised them a colored medal, but unfortunately I faced very big competition from other players because they are heavier and older.”
He added: “I have been working for two years to achieve a positive result in the Paris Olympics. The effort, diligence and commitment were not enough because achievement can only be achieved by winning a colored medal.”
He continued: “Preparations for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics will begin today, and I will work seriously and doubly hard, with the support of the Iraqi Olympic Committee,” addressing the Iraqi fans: “I promise you to win the colored medal in the upcoming Olympic competitions.”
Ali Ammar Yasser succeeded in uniting the ranks of the Iraqis, who agreed to support the young player, who is only 20 years old. The Iraqi fans supported the weightlifter greatly and saw in him the player who could bring a colorful medal to Iraq in the upcoming events.
Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze won the gold medal, Armenian weightlifter Varzdat Lalayan won the silver medal, while Bahraini weightlifter Gor Minasyan won the bronze medal. Iranian weightlifter Ali Davoudi came in fourth, followed by Syrian Maan Asaad in fifth place.
The competitions were also attended by a large crowd of Iraqi fans who came from the capital, Paris, and other French cities, as well as from countries close to France.
