The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has called on its US counterpart USADA to stop denouncing the failure of other national agencies to enforce the rules, while the US agency itself is accused of committing blatant violations, including covering up for athletes who tested positive for banned substances.
The International Agency confirmed, in an official statement, that the United States had protected athletes convicted of doping, to ensure their participation in various competitions.
A war of words has erupted over the past two days between the American and Chinese anti-doping agencies, as they exchange accusations of covering up for athletes convicted of using banned substances, to secure their participation in the Olympic Games.
China makes formal request to WADA
The Chinese agency asked its international counterpart to intensify tests on American athletes, after runner Erion Knighton was found to have used a banned substance, before participating in the olympic cycle; after the banned substance was deemed a “food contaminant”.
The United States is second in the Paris 2024 Olympic medal table, one gold behind China, the leader.
The United States will lead the overall medal standings if the two countries are tied in gold medals, as the Americans have a large lead in silver and bronze medals.
