Manchester City midfielder English: The Englishman and Alvaro Morata, the striker for the Italian club Milan, were suspended for one match, due to chanting unsportsmanlike slogans that have nothing to do with football, while celebrating the Euro 2024 title.
In the midst of the joy, the duo Rodri and Morata lost control, and chanted: “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the celebrations of the “La Roja” team for the Euro title in the Spanish capital, Madrid, in reference to Gibraltar’s affiliation with Spain.
UEFA decided to open a disciplinary investigation into the incident by its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, and the result was announcing a one-match suspension for the players for violating the basic rules of appropriate behaviour, exploiting a sporting event to express unsporting opinions, and distorting football – according to what was revealed in a UEFA statement.
The Gibraltar Football Association had filed a complaint with UEFA over the chants made by the Spanish national team duo on July 15, while they were celebrating with the rest of the “La Roja” players the country’s fourth Euro title, which made them the only team to have won the tournament the most times, one more than Germany, which has won three titles.
Due to the penalty imposed on them by UEFA, the duo Rodri and Morata will miss Spain’s next match against Serbia, on September 5, in the first round of the European Nations League.
