Netherlands beat Türkiye to reach Euro 2024 semi-finals

Netherlands qualify for semi-finals Euro 2024 With a hard-fought victory over its Turkish counterpart, two goals to one, on Saturday evening, July 6, it will set a date with its English counterpart in the semi-finals.

The match took place at the Olympic Stadium in the German capital, Berlin, in front of about 60,000 fans, and was refereed by French referee Clement Turpin.

After being behind by a clean goal until the last third of an hour of the match, the Dutch team was able to turn the tables and score two consecutive goals, with which it booked a ticket to the semi-finals with the top four.

Netherlands’ comeback against Türkiye

Turkey opened the scoring first in the 43rd minute through defender Samet Akaydin after an assist from Real Madrid’s promising star Arda Guler, who now has three goal contributions in the Germany finals with one goal and two assists.

The first half ended with Turkey leading by a clean goal, and at the beginning of the second half, coach Ronald Koeman threw in his effective elements when he brought in striker Wout Weghorst, playmaker Joey Firmin, and solid defender Mickey van de Ven.

From a direct free kick that hit the crossbar, Guler almost doubled Turkey’s score, while the Dutch team continued to control the match until veteran defender Stefan de Vrij scored the equaliser in the 70th minute.

De Vrij scored his first international goal for the Netherlands senior team since March 2015.

The Dutch continued to pressure the Turkish goal, which resulted in the second goal in the 76th minute through friendly fire, as Turkish defender Merit Mulder scored an own goal.

How many titles has the Netherlands won in the Euro?

The Dutch national team has only one European Nations Cup title, which it won in the 1988 edition hosted by West Germany. The Dutch won the final match at the time against the Soviet Union with two clean goals.

The 1988 edition was the first and last time the Netherlands appeared in the final of the European Cup, however the Netherlands reached the semi-finals of the tournament three times in the 1976, 2000 and 2004 editions.

Netherlands next match in Euro 2024

The Netherlands will play the Euro 2024 semi-final against England next Wednesday, July 10, at Signal Iduna Park, home of Borussia Dortmund, while the second semi-final will be between France and Spain.
