Euro 2024 | Netherlands to overcome disappointment, Austria dream of historic achievement

The Netherlands are set to face Romania on Tuesday in Munich in the last 16. European Nations Cup For the Euro 2024 football tournament, in an attempt to restore the “desire to win” that has been lost so far, and erase the disappointment of the first round, which ended in third place, while Austria seeks to achieve the best result in its history when it meets Turkey in Leipzig.

The two matches are decisive for the four teams, as each seeks to achieve its goals in the European Championship, amidst the hopes and renewed ambitions of their fans.

First and foremost, the Netherlands must improve their performance if they want to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008, while Austria aspires to achieve a historic achievement by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.

Netherlands struggle at Euro 2024

Despite a talented Dutch squad, the Dutch struggled in this tournament, qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams with four points, after beating Poland and drawing with France.

Centre-back Virgil van Dijk was heavily criticised by former star Rafael van der Vaart, who described his performance as “shameful” and said he lacked passion against Austria. Van Dijk responded by saying: “I know I can do better and I have to do it.”

In the round of 16, the Netherlands, also the 1988 champions in Germany, will meet Romania, who surprisingly topped their group despite losing their second match to Belgium 2-0, as they finished the group stage at Euro 2024 at the top, benefiting from their opening 3-0 win over Ukraine.

Van Dijk fully understands the criticism, saying: “Maybe we overestimated ourselves.” He also expressed concern about the team’s behaviour in the tournament, explaining: “There is a lot to say and a lot to analyse. The problem was not the tactics, but the desire to win, so we spoke about that, and in harsh words.”

Criticism has not only come from outside, with coach Ronald Koeman regularly expressing his frustration with the players’ performances, and replacing midfielder Joey Firman with striker Xavi Simons at half-time against Austria, whom he criticised for not putting in enough effort.

Austria vs Türkiye.. Between Dream and Revenge

Under coach Ralf Rangnick, Austria have been impressive in the first round of Euro 2024 in Germany, and are aiming to achieve a historic feat by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Austria rely on Rangnick’s high-pressing style, which helped him improve his reputation after an unsuccessful spell with Manchester United.

“Intensity is the key,” said Rangnick, who turned down an offer to coach Bayern Munich before the tournament. Austria will need their intensity against Turkey, who they crushed 6-1 in a friendly in March.

Turkey players celebrate victory over Georgia

For its part, Turkey seeks to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 for the first time since 2008, in addition to avenging the recent loss to Austria.

In this context, Roma winger Zeki Celik said: “Austria is a tough team and exerts a lot of pressure. We could not cope with their pressure in the friendly match.” He praised his Italian coach Vincenzo Montella, saying: “Our coach attaches great importance to tactical discipline and makes excellent analysis.”
