Daniel Moniz is the first Portuguese coach to lead Abu Salim of Libya


Portuguese coach Sergio Daniel Moniz leads the club Abu Salim Al-Libi In the next season 2024-25, succeeding Tunisian coach Shukri Al-Khatwi, who was dismissed from his position last May, after failing to lead the team to the stage of winning the local league title.

Abu Salim Club management has officially completed the contract with Portuguese Sergio Daniel Moniz, the former Benfica youth coach, to supervise the training of the first football team, making him the first Portuguese coach to lead the Libyan club in its history.

Since its establishment in 1976, the Libyan club has relied on the national and Arab Tunisian coach, the last of whom was Shukri Al-Khatwi, who wrote history with Abu Salim Al-Libi in the African Confederation Cup, in the club’s first participation in the tournament, during which the team succeeded in qualifying for the quarter-finals, where it bid farewell to the competition after losing with difficulty to the Moroccan club Nahdat Berkane.

The chairman of the Libyan team’s board of directors did not mention the financial value, nor the duration of the contract with Portuguese coach Sergio Daniel, which will most likely extend until the summer of 2025.

The last stop for the Portuguese Sergio Daniel was in the Ugandan League, when he coached Kampala City in June 2023, and he was dismissed after only four months, after the poor results achieved by the club under his supervision in the local league, where it lost all four first matches in the competition.

Portuguese Sergio is a coach with many experiences in Africa.

Coach Sergio (43 years old) holds a UEFA-approved coaching license and a degree in sports science and physical education. He began his coaching career at Sporting Lisbon in the youth categories, before taking over the responsibility of coaching Benfica’s youth team, from where he began his career in Africa.

The Portuguese coach Sergio’s coaching career has witnessed many previous stations, as he supervised the training of 10 clubs in various African leagues, where he previously trained Kaduna United (Nigeria), Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Singida Big Stars (Tanzania), CD Lunda Sul (Angola), Vilanculos (Mozambique), Mirbat (Oman), Kabuscorp (Angola), Santa Rita CFC (Angola), Township Rollers FC (Botswana), and Kampala City (Uganda).
