American Gauff crushes Todoni to reach Wimbledon third round

American star Coco Gauff, the US Open champion, continues her brilliance at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament. For tenniswhere she qualified with merit to the third round after her crushing victory over Romanian Anca Todoni with a score of 6-2 and 6-1.

Gauff, 20, easily defeated her 142nd-ranked opponent, making her first appearance in a Grand Slam.

“I’m happy with the way I played, I could have been sharper on some points,” said Gauff, who broke her 19-year-old opponent five times.

The American, who burst onto the scene at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old and reached the fourth round in 2019, beating compatriot Venus Williams, will face Britain’s Sunay Kartal, who beat France’s Clara Borel 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Former world number one Naomi Osaka of Japan bid farewell after losing to American Emma Navarro 4-6, 1-6 on the main court in less than an hour.

Osaka, 26, a four-time Grand Slam champion, is making her first appearance at Wimbledon since 2019, with her first-round win over France’s Diane Parry being her first at the tournament since 2018.

Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur

Another American, Danielle Collins (11), qualified after defeating the Danish Clara Towson 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), while the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (20) reached the same round after defeating the Polish Magdalena Frisch 7-5, 6-3.

Tunisian Ons Jabeur, runner-up in the last edition and ranked 10th in the world, qualified for the third round on Tuesday, with an easy victory over Japanese Mayuka Ushijima in two sets, 6-3 and 6-1, in less than an hour.

Ons Jabeur will then face American Robin Montgomery, ranked 161st in the world, as she seeks to fulfil her dream of winning a major title.
