African Champions League Draw | Al-Ahly on an Open Road and a Possible Arab Clash


Today, Thursday, July 11, the draw for the African Champions League for the 2024-2025 season was held, and the Arab clubs learned about their competitors in the first and second preliminary rounds of the competition.

The Egyptian club Al-Ahly, the title holder, and the Tunisian club Esperance Sportive de Tunis will not participate in the first preliminary round of the most prestigious African competition after they were exempted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The first leg matches of the first preliminary round will be held between August 16 and 18, while the second leg matches will be held between August 23 and 25. The first leg matches of the second preliminary round will be played between September 13 and 15, and the second leg matches between September 22 and 25.

The draw for the first preliminary round placed the Tunisian club, Al-Ittihad Al-Monastir, against the Chadian club, SPS, while the Egyptian club, Pyramids, will face the team (Kjusc) from Zanzibar, and the winner will face the winner of the match between the Tanzanian club, Azam, and the Rwandan National Army.

Algerian club Chabab Belouizdad will play in the first round against Congolese club Leopards and will face in the second round the winner of the match between Burkinabe Customs Club and Benin’s Coton Sport.

The Algerian club Mouloudia will meet the Liberian team Watanga, while the Moroccan club Raja will clash with the National Guard Sports Association team from Niger and will face the winner of the match between Ghanaian Starmix and Cameroonian Victoria United in the second round.

The first preliminary round of the African Champions League will witness an Arab derby between Al-Hilal of Sudan and the Libyan representative, while Nouadhibou of Mauritania will face FC Melo of Guinea.

It should be noted that the Libyan clubs in the African competitions have not yet been determined due to the participation of the Libyan league teams in the six-team crowning tournament so far.

The title holder, Al Ahly of Egypt, will enter the 2024-2025 CAF Champions League in the second preliminary round and will face the winner of the match between Al-Merrikh Bentiu of South Sudan and Gor Mahia of Kenya.

The runner-up, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, also appears to have an easy task in qualifying, as the African Champions League draw placed them in the second preliminary round against the winner of the match between Arta Solar Djibouti and Dekeda Somalia.

The second preliminary round of the African Champions League may witness an Arab clash between the Algerian club Mouloudia and the Tunisian club Monastir if they pass the first preliminary round, as they will face the Liberian club Watanga and the Chadian club SPS, respectively.

It is worth noting that the draw for the 2024-2025 African Champions League, which generally resulted in easy matches for Arab clubs, was held at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
