A fiery confrontation between Portugal and the Czech Republic in Euro 2024

The match between Portugal and the Czech Republic will be held today, Tuesday, at Leipzig Stadium in Germany, as part of the first round of Group 6 of the European Championship “Euro 2024”. In a “fiery” confrontation that promises a lot due to the strong competition and exciting atmosphere it brings at the beginning of the journey of both teams in the tournament.

Portugal, the holders of the Euro 2016 title, enters the match with a strong squad led by stars such as: Cristiano Ronaldo Diogo Jota, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Joao Felix, Ruben Diaz and Bruno Fernandes, while the Czech Republic is counting on the brilliance of its prominent players such as Ivan Hasek and Patrik Schick.

Spanish coach Roberto Martinez leads the team, as they aspire to regain their title following their victory in 2016, specifically after Cristiano’s famous goal in the Euro final at the expense of France.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 39 years old, is considered the spiritual leader of the national team, having scored more than 900 goals in his career, and is also the all-time top scorer for the Portuguese national team.

Before facing Portugal and the Czech Republic, coach Roberto Martinez confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo was summoned to participate in the European Nations Cup, thanks to his exceptional qualities and the amazing numbers he achieved this season, as he scored 50 goals in 51 matches with the Saudi Al-Nasr team.

After their loss in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup to Morocco, Martinez is set to restore confidence and stability, as the team achieved good results during the qualifiers, scoring 11 goals, including a big impact from Cristiano.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The current Portuguese national team includes many players who participated in the World Cup, making them strong candidates to win the Euro 2024 title. They open their campaign with a difficult confrontation, as experts consider the match between Portugal and the Czech Republic a key one in the “Seleção”’s progress in the tournament.

As for the Czech Republic, it is currently led by Ivan Hasek, as it has not lost any match under his leadership, which makes its meeting with Portugal more exciting and challenging.

While Portugal is among the favorites to win the cup, the Czech Republic has not progressed past the quarter-finals in 20 years.

Like Portugal, the Czechs lifted the cup once, in 1976 in the name of Czechoslovakia. A three-man backline with two full-backs led by Slavia Prague’s Tomas Holic must find a way to stop Ronaldo if his country is to start strongly.

Pepe is waiting for a record

Retired Hungarian goalkeeper, Gábor Király, still holds the European Championship record, having set it on June 26, 2016 when he participated with his country in the Round of 16 at the age of 40 years and 86 days.

It is expected that Portuguese defender Pepe (41 years old) will be able to break this record in the Euro 2024 edition, and if he participates even for just one minute in the match between Portugal and the Czech Republic today, he will become the oldest player to participate in the history of the tournament in terms of age.
